David walked into the kitchen and asked Rachel, "Hey, are we out of milk?" He meant it neutrally. He just wanted to know if he should pour a different cereal.
Rachel whipped around. "I can't remember everything! If you want milk so badly, go to the store yourself!"
Because Rachel was in Negative Sentiment Override (NSO). When a marriage lives in this state, the brain literally scrambles incoming signals. A neutral comment lands as a hostile criticism. A positive comment lands as manipulation. David was fighting the data, but Rachel was fighting the lens.
You cannot talk your partner out of Negative Sentiment Override by explaining that you are actually a really nice person. You cannot demand that they "just stop being so defensive."
The only way to clean the lens is to flood the system with positive data. You must overwhelm their confirmation bias by being so consistently reliable, warm, and generous that their brain is forced to accept that the "enemy" narrative is factually incorrect.
