Megan and Derek had a blowout fight on a Wednesday night. Derek loaded the dishwasher "wrong." Megan snapped at him. Derek threw his hands up: "It's just plates! Why are you so controlling?" Megan immediately started crying.
To Derek, the argument was about the spatial arrangement of ceramic. It made zero logical sense for his wife to cry over plates, so he assumed she was just being irrational.
The dishwasher was just the 10% of the iceberg visible above the water. The 90% below the water was the Meaning. When couples try to solve the 10% using logic, they end up violently crashing into the 90% below the surface.
The next time you find yourself screaming about something objectively trivial—a text message, a tone of voice, a piece of laundry—stop. Drop the logistics entirely. You will never win the argument by proving your timeline is more accurate.
Instead, look at the person you love and ask yourself: What are they trying to protect right now? What is the treasure they feel is under attack? When you start speaking to the treasure instead of the trash, the conflict changes completely.
